Avondale is located on the slopes of the Klein Drakenstein mountains to the south of the Paarl.
The ethos of the estate is as a dynamic living system where soil, water and energy; plants, animals and people; even buildings, are part of a complex web of relationships and networks.
Certified organic and practicing bio-dynamic agriculture; Avondale goes beyond both these beneficial systems of natural farming by using the best 21st Century science, technology and knowledge to enhance sustainability. They actively strive to re-establish indigenous Fynbos species among the vineyards and use only indigenous vegetation as wind breakers, and cover crops. Avondale has their own 'duck mobile' for the flock of ducks which are released to the vines daily to control the snail and insect population.
The commitment to promoting life does not only lead to Mother Nature’s approval; it also ensures the premium quality of Avondale’s unique, naturally-made, slow wines. The vigour of the well-tended vines leads to excellent grapes bursting with fresh flavours that are evident in their individually-styled, classic wines, full of life and character.
70 hectares of the 300 hectare site are under vines. There are 13 different soil types originating from decomposed sandstone and granite and a variety of slopes create different micro-climates. Rhone and Bordeaux grape varieties make up the majority of the plantings.
